Sometimes God answers our prayers with a miracle.

There are moments when God intervenes in ways only He can. A door suddenly opens. A need is unexpectedly supplied. A situation changes overnight. The mountain that stood before us is simply moved.

But God does not always work that way.

Sometimes the answer to our prayer is not a miracle that eliminates the process, but grace that enables us to walk through it.

Instead of removing the mountain instantly, God may place a shovel in our hands. He invites us to take the next step, do the work that is ours to do, and trust Him with what only He can do.

Nehemiah understood this.

When he learned that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down and its gates had been burned, his first response was not action. It was prayer. He wept, fasted, and sought God.

But prayer was not the end of the story.

God opened the door for Nehemiah to return to Jerusalem, and then the work began. There were stones to move, walls to rebuild, opposition to overcome, people to organize, and discouragement to resist.

God could have rebuilt the walls miraculously.

Instead, He gave His people vision, courage, strength, and determination. Then He called them to build.

“So we built the wall… for the people had a mind to work.”

— Nehemiah 4:6 (NKJV)

Faith and effort are not enemies. Sometimes effort is the evidence of faith.

Noah believed God, and then he built an ark.

Israel trusted God for the Promised Land, and then they had to possess it.

The disciples believed Jesus could feed the multitude, but they still had to distribute the bread.

Again and again, Scripture reminds us that trusting God does not always mean standing still. Sometimes faith prays and waits. Sometimes faith gets up and goes to work.

There may be a mountain in your life right now that you have repeatedly asked God to move. Keep praying. Keep believing. Never underestimate what God can do in a moment.

But also ask another question:

Lord, is there something You want me to do?

Perhaps there is a phone call to make, a habit to change, a relationship to repair, a discipline to begin, a responsibility to accept, or simply another faithful step to take.

The mountain may not disappear overnight. But stone by stone, step by step, prayer by prayer, you may discover that God has been answering you all along.

Sometimes God moves the mountain. Sometimes He gives us the strength, wisdom, and opportunity to begin moving it.
